The disk inside is slightly smaller, about 5.125 inches (or 130.2 millimeters) in diameter. At its thickest point where the edges are folded over, the shell measures about 0.065 inch (or 1.65 millimeters) thick. A single disk weighs just under half an ounce, (about 12.5 grams). The figure below shows a typical 5.25-inch floppy disk. As with the 3.5-inch disk, a 5.25-inch floppy is a sandwich using the magnetic-medium coated disk as its bologna. The shell starts as two pieces of a tough but flexible textured black (or colored) polyester. The edges of the top are folded over the bottom, then sonically welded together. Inside the shell is a layer of non-woven cloth, the liner, on each side of the magnetic disk serves to reduce the friction of the disk spinning against the shell and sweep contaminants off the disk. | | Word for the Wise! | Although the plastic shell of a 5.25-inch floppy is tough, its too thin to grant the disk inside complete protection. Sharp object easily can penetrate the shell. Worse, writing with ballpoint pen or pencil on the shell can permanently deform the magnetic disk through the shell. To prevent problems, always write on label before applying them to a 5.25-inch disk. If you must write on a label already affixed to a disk, use a soft felt-tipped marker. | | Click here to see a Photo Description of a 5.25" Floppy Disk | | |
